Ryan packs a duffel bag, then calls Julie to inform her that he’s leaving. In the house, Seth is trying to make calls to learn why Summer slipped out of Newport late last night. But when he picks up the phone, he overhears Ryan and Julie’s conversation about the private eye and Volchok’s whereabouts. Seth immediately heads to the pool house to intercept Ryan. He asks for a ride to the store in an attempt to delay Ryan’s departure, but it doesn’t work. So Seth jumps into Ryan’s Jeep and refuses to get out. Ryan promises that he’s only going to find Volchok and inform the police, so Seth reasons that there shouldn’t be any problem with him tagging along. Ryan thinks, and then the boys take off.
Back at Brown, Summer finds Che leading yet another protest. This time against the board of trustees’ decision to cut down an old tree on the quad. She offers moral support for the protest, then sneaks off to her dorm room…where she finds Taylor napping in her bed. Confused that Taylor was in Newport and now Providence, neither of which are in France, Summer demands an explanation. As it turns out, well, the story will have to wait because maintenance workers with chainsaws are starting to eye up that tree.
Over at Harbor, Julie has been called into Dean Torres’ office to discuss Kaitlin’s repeated absences and tardy appearances. Dean Torres asks how things are at the Roberts-Cooper household, and Julie stammers and says things are decent considering the circumstances. Dean Torres mentions Harbor’s upcoming clothing drive for charity and suggests that Julie and Kaitlin work it together.
Meanwhile, Kirsten and Sandy are analyzing a note from Seth that reads, “Angry Nudfo Chocolate Love.” Perhaps it’s some fan fiction for Prison Break. Kirsten is concerned, but Sandy thinks it’s nothing. At least until he gets a call from Seth explaining that he had to write the note in code in case Ryan found it. Seth claims the note is an anagram, then mentions that they’re Mexico looking for Volchok. Now Sandy is also concerned.
Ryan finds Seth, knows he calls Sandy and throws the phone away. He then angrily tells Seth he can either trust him or go back home. Elsewhere, Julie finds Kaitlin and mentions her meeting with Dean Torres, as well as the upcoming clothing drive.
Ryan and Seth check into a cozy little motel in Ensenada. When Seth ducks into the bathroom for a moment, Ryan immediately ditches him and heads to the bar where Volchok supposedly works. But the classically gruff bartender gruffly informs Ryan that he fired Volchok. Ryan asks where Mr. Volchok might be, and the drink slinger tells Ryan to adios.
Taylor is standing in Summer’s dorm, analyzing the chilly décor, when Summer’s roommate, Amber, enters. During their quick chat, Taylor learns that Summer never mentioned her boyfriend to Amber. And when Amber hears boyfriend, she guesses that Taylor means Che. It’s all very illuminating for a busybody like Taylor.
Seth wanders the Ensenada bar scene in a search for Ryan. He stumbles across a group of Marines guzzling tequila and gets caught up in a round of shots. The Marines promise that after a few rounds of shots they’ll go with Seth to find his friend. And get some tattoos.
Julie and Kaitlin help organize clothing for the charity drive when Kirsten shows up to help as well. Kirsten mentions that the boys took off to Mexico and Julie expresses surprise that Seth went too. Then she quickly tries to cover that she would know anything about Mexico. In a fantastic bit of timing, Ryan calls Julie with the news that Volchok has been fired. But Ryan will keep looking.
Taylor marches over to Che’s tree rally to quiz Summer about Che and Seth. Has she called Seth back? Taylor whips out her cell phone and dials up Seth. But, of course, since Ryan threw away Seth’s phone earlier, Summer ends up having a brief chat with some Mexican guy before heading back to the tree.
The tequila shots continue and Seth doesn’t hold his hooch as well as a Marine. Seth stumbles into the same bar Ryan went into earlier and comes across the same gruff bartender. Seth slurs out that Ryan is looking for Volchok because he killed his girlfriend. The bartender gives Seth the same treatment he gave Ryan, but the cute little waitress overhears Seth and watches him stagger out. The waitress finds Seth on the curb and tells him she knows where Volchok is.
Morning comes and Sandy and Kirsten are now in Ensenada as well. Across the continent, Taylor is sitting in Summer’s dorm room when she drags herself in. Taylor says she’s heading back to Newport, but not before telling Summer that Seth is better for her than Che. Summer scoffs at the notion that she’s dating Che and ignoring Seth. But Taylor again implores Summer to call Seth, claiming she’ll lose him. By the way, before she leaves, Taylor left France because she got married and had to run away from her husband. But if Summer’s going to be grumpy about Seth, Taylor will just go home.
Ryan returns to the motel room. Seth asks how it went and Ryan admits that he didn’t find him. However, he’s not leaving until he does. Fine. Seth knows where he is. But he’s not saying until Ryan promises to foreswear violence. Ryan doesn’t and Seth gives him the address of Volchok’s casa anyway.
Kaitlin comes downstairs to find Julie still zoned out in front of the TV. She announces that she’s leaving for the clothing drive before reminding her mother that one of her daughters is still alive. In regards to the dead daughter, Ryan enters another bar in search of Volchok. He walks to a backroom that’s oh-so-similar to the one he’s been hiding in himself, breaks down the door and finds…nothing.
Seth, meanwhile, has found Volchok and tells him they need to talk. Seth tells him Ryan is in Ensenada, so Volchok starts packing a bag. Seth explains that he’s trying to prevent Ryan from killing Volchok and ruining his own life. Ryan won’t stop chasing Volchok, so maybe he should turn himself in. Sandy can help him, get him a light sentence.
Sandy and Kirsten find Ryan in the bar and beg him to come home. Ryan says he can’t as long as Volchok is there. That’s when Seth walks in and says Volchok is gone. In Providence, Taylor is waiting at the airport when Summer finds her and apologizes. Taylor was right, she is pulling away from Seth. The girls hug and Taylor is off.
Julie shows up at the clothing drive, admitting that Kaitlin’s words inspired her to show up. Dean Torres shows up with some shocking news. Shocking! It would seem that somebody found some tops they donated to the clothing drive at a boutique. Somebody stole the clothes and sold them. That somebody would be Kaitlin, of course.
That night, Summer struggles to write a heartfelt letter to Seth. Perhaps she should try expresses her thoughts in comic book form. At the same time, the Cohens drive back from Mexico. Seth with Sandy, Kirsten with Ryan. Sandy assures Seth that he did the right thing. Kirsten tells Ryan that she worried about him like he was her own son. Sandy tries to figure out how Ryan learned where Volchok was. That would’ve taken a PI, which takes money. Say, Julie Cooper has money.
Back in Newport, Sandy calls Julie and asks her to come by the yacht club for a chat. When he asks about Mexico, Julie pleads ignorance. Sandy mentions that he could have her arrested as an accessory to murder, but she deftly points out that means Ryan would be arrested as well, and Sandy’s not about to do that. Sandy can’t believe Julie would still put his kids in danger after everything they’ve been through. Julie looks at him and replies that at least he still has his kids.

Kaitlin and Julie are forced by the schools dean to work together on Harbors clothing drive, and Julie is ostracized by the Cohens when they discover what she has been up to. And Taylor drops in unannounced on Summer and the truth comes out as Summer continues separating herself from everything Orange County. Special Guest Star: Chris Pratt.
