Episode Guide
Summer lies in bed looking at her engagement ring with a bit of consternation. She breaks the news to Taylor. And then the news that she isn’t so sure about this whole wedding adventure. But she doesn’t know how to tell Seth without breaking his heart. Taylor advises the honest and direct route.
Elsewhere, Seth is also racked with regret. They truly are the perfect couple! The couples head down to the pier, Ryan and Taylor observing Seth and Summer talk in the distance. Ryan and Taylor assume that since neither Seth nor Summer really wants to get married, they’ll be able to pause things without a problem. So when Seth and Summer end their conversation and return, guess what they have to say? Right! They’re getting married!
On that same pier, later that day, Sandy meets up with Frank Atwood. Frank explains that he wants to see Ryan, but knew he couldn’t just show up and ring the doorbell. At the same time, Julie is telling the story to Kirsten. Frank met Bullitt while both were locked up, he put booze behind him, etc, etc.
Meanwhile, over at Harbor, a new student, Will, gives a book presentation to the class. Will is say, fairly earnest about his studies and gives a sincere presentation from the point of view of Buck the dog in The Call of the Wild. Following Will, Kaitlin, being the realist she is, merely barks for hers because, Buck, after all, is a dog. The teacher keeps Kaitlin after class to inform her that Kaitlin is failing English. So maybe Will can help her with a revised presentation.
Sandy drops by El Pavo Guapo to talk to Ryan about Frank. Ryan knew that his father would always get out of jail at some point, he’s just surprised that he came to Newport. Ryan says he isn’t ready to see him just yet. Sandy later calls Frank, breaks the news and wishes him the best of luck. When Frank hangs up the phone in the hotel…Julie, who’s sitting there, asks him what he’s going to do.
On Ryan’s advice, Seth launches a plan to get Summer to break off the engagement first. He gives her a cookbook and a Torah, because if she’s going to marry, she’ll need to learn how to cook dinner and convert to Judaism. In whatever order she decides. But Summer, of course, realizes that Seth is trying to smoke her out. She complains to Taylor that Seth wants a guilt-free way to end the engagement and she’s not going for it. She’s mostly upset that she didn’t think of it first.
Sandy comes down to New Match, and he’s a bit surprised to see Frank there. Frank apologizes and he wishes it didn’t have to come to this, but…and that when Julie chimes in with the news that Frank is dying. Cancer. The next morning, Kirsten implores Sandy to tell Ryan about Frank’s condition. Sandy, not entirely convinced Frank is truly ill, says he just wants to protect Ryan from getting hurt.
At the comic book shop, Seth and Summer continue their mutually assured destruction showdown, each making increasingly outrageous claims and neither backing down. Kirsten has dropped by Sandy’s office with some lunch and another plea to tell Ryan about Frank. Sandy tells her that he called the prison doctor to inquire about Frank’s medical records. They should have the truth shortly.
Taylor picks up Ryan after work, and Ryan says Kirsten has asked him to stop by her office for a chat. Ryan, assuming it’s about Frank, isn’t looking forward to it. Although Taylor advises Ryan that this could be an opportune time to confront Frank and get everything off his chest. Taylor should know, too, seeing as how her father lives in San Diego, visits Newport four times a year and Taylor hasn’t spent more than twenty minutes with him since she was seven.
That night, Julie helps Summer study Hebrew with the aid of flash cards. Confused by Summer’s sudden Hebrewphilia, Julie wonders what’s going on. Summer admits to everything. The pregnancy scare, the engagement, the fact that she doesn’t want to get married and the fact that she doesn’t want to call off the engagement and give Seth the upper hand. All Julie wants to know is why didn’t Summer come to her first? Who knows more about manipulating men than Julie Cooper-Nichols-Roberts-Terwilliger?
Frank and Kirsten walk along the pier talking about the recent past and Kirsten reveals that a special someone is waiting for them on the beach. Frank Jr. That is…Ryan. Ryan asks him if he’d like some coffee.
The following day, Ryan reports to Seth that the meeting was…fine. Just fine. Seth is amazed that nothing more came of the meeting, but Ryan says he just didn’t feel like dredging up the past. Maybe tonight when Frank comes by the house for dinner.
Elsewhere, Kaitlin arrives to class early and asks Will for the presentation she ordered him to write for her. Will hands her back her notebook and Kaitlin smugly accepts it without looking inside, an important note. The teacher arrives and asks Kaitlin to address the class. She triumphantly grabs her notebook and heads to the front of the room. But when she opens the notebook, all she finds written inside is, “Woof, woof, woof, woof.” Which is technically a different presentation from Kaitlin’s original, “Ruff, ruff, ruff, ruff”, but probably not what the teacher had in mind. Forced to wing it, Kaitlin substitutes her own life story for Buck’s and it somehow works out.
Summer finds Seth at the comic book shop and plays her Julie-crafted trump card. She wants to elope in Vegas. Now. Right now. Tonight. Seth hems and haws, but Summer has an answer for every issue Seth raises. It seems that the advantage has tilted toward the feminine side.
Frank, Ryan, Sandy, Kirsten and Taylor are having dinner at the Cohen house. After dinner, Sandy and Ryan clear the table, which would be a perfect time for the prison doctor to call. And there he is. The verdict?
That’ll have to wait, because Seth and Summer are glumly driving to Vegas. Finally, Seth breaks and pulls over with an admission that he can’t do this. It just doesn’t feel right getting married…without asking Dr. Roberts first.
Back in Newport, Sandy returns to the dinner table and asks to speak with Frank in private. Sandy tells him he knows he’s healthy. So before the cab Sandy called arrived, Frank is going to tell Ryan the truth and say goodbye. Frank pleads with Sandy, saying that Ryan didn’t want to see him before. He was desperate. As Sandy firmly tells Frank to get out, the rest of the family comes to see what the fuss is. Frank refuses to leave, so Sandy grabs his arm to escort him out. Frank shakes free, so Sandy drills him with a punch in the face. Before Frank can come back at Sandy, Ryan jumps between the two of them, both metaphorically and physically.
Kaitlin tracks down Will after the basketball game and tells him that even though he’s still a geek, she respects his prank. They will be kissing soon. Believe that. At the same time, Frank is outside with Ryan begging for his forgiveness. He’s trying to change, but he needs Ryan’s help. Ryan thinks it’s best if Frank just disappeared for a bit. The cab comes, the guys hug and Frank heads off into the night.
Frank and Julie walk along the beach, Frank reticent about his lie. Julie, an experienced liar herself, isn’t that hard on him. Frank explains that Bullitt has job opportunities across the country for him, so maybe he’ll leave Newport for a bit. But before he goes, he has a little present for her. The books for New Match. Plus some advice that the prostitution ring is pretty lucrative. She could pay off that house with it. And then a kiss. So…three gifts then.
