Who?: David Rountree Who!?: He was the Angry Trucker Hat Guy who Ryan gambled against in Vegas.
1. Were you a fan of the show before your appearance?
I had only seen the show a couple of times before. It was the first season and although, we were the next to last episode, only 4 or 5 episodes had actually aired when we filmed. Benjamin McKenzie (Ryan Atwood) and I went to rival schools growing up, so I thought it was going to be fun going head to head with him in the episode.
2. What was it like being featured on such a successful show?
I knew the show was popular, but I didn't realize how many fans there were of the show until after this episode aired. I was approached in the supermarket the next day by a group of high school students who had seen the show and asked me if I "was that trucker hat guy."
3. Have you been faced with any obscure angry/trucker hat stereotypes?
I have been asked to wear a trucker hat on a few other shows, which makes me think that either they were fans of The OC, or I have bad hair.
4. Get to keep the hat? It was a nice hat.
Since Adam Brody's character had to toss the hat into the water at the end of the episode, I think there were about 10 hats on set. It was my undersanding that his first throw was dead on and they were left with a bunch of extra hats... although I didn't get to keep one. Too bad, it was a nice hat.
5. Have you had any actual poker games that have been THAT intense?
The week following the airing of The OC, the producers of the show "Dr, Vegas" with Rob Lowe and Tom Sizemore brought me in to play a card counting cheat. So, we headed back to Vegas (although this time, Vegas was a Los Angeles Studio). I get into quite a bit of trouble in that episode too.
6. And finally, were there any outstanding experiences from your time on the show?
The show was a lot of fun to film. We actually shot this episode in Las Vegas and stayed in the Hard Rock Hotel which was a treat. Since we filmed longer than expected, we had to fly back late at night on the studio's private jet. I sat next to Tate Donavan (Jimmy Cooper) and we quoted the film Space Camp (one of his first films from 1984) all the way back. I still love that film.
